Keira Amstutz has been selected to be the new president and CEO of the Indiana Humanities Council, effective April 14th. Keira has a strong arts and humanities background including leading Indianapolis's Cultural Development Initiative.

The IHC is thrilled to to bring her passion for cultural programming to one of the country's oldest and most respected state humanities councils.

IHC Grant Deadline

The Indiana Humanities Council is pleased to announce its 2008 Grant guidelines. This year we are offering special priority to all requests for grant funding for programs that address our 2008 theme of immigration.

The next (and last) grant deadline is September 15th. Mark your calendars to give yourself plenty of time.

Designing Place: Architecture as Community Art Curriculum (#04-4006)

This project will develop and implement an eighth-grade curriculum based on the study of architecture and its application in the real world. Focusing on local examples, students will learn to identify architectural styles by their distinguishing features while gaining an understanding of the complex social and historical impulses that created new fashions on the built environment.

East Central Neighborhood Community Landmarks Brochure (#04-4008)

ARCH will create a report and develop a brochure that documents the historic, architectural, and cultural resources of Fort Wayne's East Central Neighborhood. The area is known for its diverse population and its examples of homes from different periods, dating from 1840 to 1950. The report will offer a resource for future redevelopment plans.

From the Graveyard: A Look at Potato Creek's Pioneers (#04-4011)

A walking tour brochure will be produced for the Porter Rea Cemetery, a burial place for African American pioneers who settled St. Joseph County prior to the Civil War. Visitors will learn about the people who inhabited this area, the cemetery's Victorian era landscape design, and the stone monuments with their carvings and inscriptions.

Historic Homes of Southern Indiana Digital Photo Archive (#04-4013)

A collection of multiple listing service pages from the archives of the Southern Indiana Realtors Association will be scanned, indexed, and stored in a digital format. The documents, dating from the 1960s and 1970s, include black-and-white photographs and details about each of more than 4000 homes and commercial properties in Floyd and Clark Counties.

Historic Theater Initiative Educational Materials (#04-4009)

An educational brochure will focus on historic theaters, explaining why these edifices are worth preserving and providing information about the Historic Theater Initiative. Photographs of theaters around the state will be included in the brochure.

History Through the Camera's Eye (#04-4014)

The historical society will sponsor a series of four educational summer workshops for younger teenagers aimed at creating intergenerational links among Montgomery County residents and engaging youth in the appreciation of historic preservation, architecture, and historic sites. A photo exhibit created by the participants will highlight the summer's events.

Ouiatenon Archeology Interpretation (#04-4021)

The creation of an exhibit and related programming will accompany the reopening of Fort Ouiatenon Historic Park in Tippecanoe County. Panel exhibits on the history of the site, artifacts and reproductions illustrating French, British, American Colonial, and Indian life at the post, and hands-on archaeology activities will help to interpret these layers of history.

Vincennes Historic and Architectural Tours (#04-4025)

A walking tour of local architectural styles, a historic buildings walking tour to commemorate major events in Vincennes, and a Lost Treasures virtual tour website will be part of this project. Pamphlets will be developed to guide participants on the walking tours.
