Keira Amstutz has been selected to be the new president and CEO of the Indiana Humanities Council, effective April 14th. Keira has a strong arts and humanities background including leading Indianapolis's Cultural Development Initiative.

The IHC is thrilled to to bring her passion for cultural programming to one of the country's oldest and most respected state humanities councils.

IHC Grant Deadline

The Indiana Humanities Council is pleased to announce its 2008 Grant guidelines. This year we are offering special priority to all requests for grant funding for programs that address our 2008 theme of immigration.

The next (and last) grant deadline is September 15th. Mark your calendars to give yourself plenty of time.

A symposium at the Columbus Learning Center will bring together architecture professionals to reflect on design and the unique built environment of Columbus, Indiana. The symposium and accompanying exhibit will be an American Institute of Architecture (AIA) 150th Anniversary sponsored event. Cosponsors include the Columbus Area Visitors Center, Columbus Museum of Art & Design, Columbus Area Arts Council, Lincoln Central Family Neighborhood Center, and AIA. (Oct. 12-14, 2007)

A walking tour brochure of New Albany's Downtown National Register District will be produced in this grant project. The tour will encompass approximately 45 buildings and also provide information on the city's Historic Preservation Commission.

Farrington's Grove is the oldest surviving neighborhood in Terre Haute, bounded by 4th and 7th Streets, from Poplar to Hulman Streets. An updated guide to the district, composed of elegant nineteenth and twentieth-century houses, workers' "shotgun" cottages and bungalows, and public buildings, will be published. Cosponsors are Terre Haute Landmarks, Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, Vigo Co. Historical Society, and Vigo Co. Public Library. (Available in fall 2007)

This project will gather together information about Jasper County's historic structures and ponts of interest. The material will be organized with photographs, maps, and descriptions into a brochure that will be made widely available to visitors and residents of the county.

West Washington was once the fashionable address of many of South Bend's most notable citizens; it includes Tippecanoe Place, the former home of Clement Studebaker. This project will produce a printed brochure, a PDF that can be hosted on partner websites, a downloadable podcast for a narrated tour, and a reference material for a guided tour.

Bridges to the Future: Indiana's Covered Bridges in the 21st Century (#07-4014)

Hunting History: A Geocaching Guide through Crawford County (#07-4015)

A geocache consists of a waterproof container hidden at a site but discoverable using GPS coordinates. Finding these caches is a popular hobby, which will serve as an introduction to Crawford County's historic sites. A treasure map brochure, to be distributed by the Crawford County Tourism Board, and lesson plans for 4th grade students will be developed. (July 28, 2007, kickoff event)

Goshen's Hattle Hotel dates back to the 1860s. After many years of decline, it was acquired by LaCasa of Goshen and rehabilitated as apartments for low to moderate income residents. This project will showcase the hotel's history by mounting a permanent exhibit of historic photographs, newspaper articles, and artifacts in the hotel's lobby. (Dec. 7, 2007, opening event)

Lanier Mansion's Right Angle: Everyday Math and Architectural Design for 1840s Greek Revivals (#07-4017)

The purpose of this program is to excite and educate students about architecture, design, math, and their communities by exposing them to real issues in historic architecture and preservation at the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site.
