AMERICA
C A
For many years before becoming an American citizen in 1941, Alistair
Cooke, a native of Manchester, England, had gained a deep understanding
of his adopted country, studying the United States as journalist. In
this award-winning series, Cooke traces his pursuit of the American
essence over four decades, presenting his personal view of American
history. His narrative begins with the arrival of the first white
settlers and traces the development of the continent to the 1970s. 52

HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Exploring the roots of contrasting American ideals, Cooke analyzes
the settlement of America’s East Coast by merchants and social
dissenters from England and the evolution of the regional characters of
North and South.
INVENTING
A NATION
Cooke finds the precedents of modern politics in the Independence
Hall debates, visits Jefferson’s Monticello and traces the westward
surge beyond the Appalachians that changed the character of the young
republic.
MAKING A REVOLUTION
Cooke offers his view on the reasons for the break with the mother
country--inept colonial governors and costly frontier wars--and the
pragmatic struggles behind the ideologies.
THE
NEW FOUND LAND
Cooke explains how whites reached North America and what they sought,
following the explorations of the Spanish and French.

GEORGE
WASHINGTON--THE MAN WHO WOULDN’T BE KING
H C
A P
He was bumbling, but ambitious. He volunteered to serve his
country, but insisted on being reimbursed for expenses. He was the most
famous general of the Revolution, but a dismal tactician on the
battlefield. George Washington has been sculpted, painted, emulated and
deified for more than 200 years, but few Americans have any idea who he
was. This program explores our first President’s relationship with his
wife and other women; with his troops and the revolutionary cause; with
his slaves and with his fellow founding fathers. This program gives an
unconventional look at the man who insisted that America be a
democracy. 60 mins / 1991
