This unit of instruction covers the period of the Civil War in United States History.  The activities in this unit are designed to give the students an overview of the important events and key figures during this era.

Instructional Plan

Instructional Day Description
Day 1
Inroducing the Unit  - Teacher will provide an overview of the activities that students will do during the Civil War Unit.  The teacher will provide background information on the Civil War, the causes, and the results. Students will receive their study guide for the test that will be at the end of week 2 of the unit.
Day 2
Video Synopsis - Students will watch a video that summarizes the main events and participants in the Civil War.  Students will write a 4 paragraph summary of the video for homework.  Students will required to take notes during the video, which they can use when they write their summaries.  The notes will be attached to their summaries and handed in the following day.
Day 3
Photo Analysis - Using a video projector, the teacher will display a variety of photographs and artwork and guide students to use the photo analysis grid.  Then students will receive copies of a selection of photographs and will use class time to fill in the analysis sheets about the pictures.  Students will present their analyses to the class when everyone is finished.
Day 4
Map/battle Chronology and Debate Evaluation - Simultaneously, half of the class will work on the map/battle chronology and half of the students will do the debate evaluation activity.  Students will have 35-40 minutes to comlete their activity, and time at the end of the period will be spent summarizing what each group did.
Day 5
Timeline Creation and Slave Narratives - Simultaneously, half of the class will work on the timeline and half of the students will do the slave narratives activity.  Students will have 35-40 minutes to comlete their activity, and time at the end of the period will be spent summarizing what each group did.
Day 6
Writing on Women and Biographical Sketches - Simultaneously, half of the class will work on the Writing on Women activity and half of the students will do the Biographical Sketches activity.  Students will have 35-40 minutes to comlete their activity, and time at the end of the period will be spent summarizing what each group did.
Day 7
Song Analysis and Weapon Collage - Simultaneously, half of the class will work on the Song Analysis and half of the students will do the Weapon Collage.  Students will have 35-40 minutes to comlete their activity, and time at the end of the period will be spent summarizing what each group did.
Day 8
Art Compositions and Poetry Analysis - Simultaneously, half of the class will work on the Art Compositions and half of the students will do the Poetry Analysis activity.  Students will have 35-40 minutes to comlete their activity, and time at the end of the period will be spent summarizing what each group did.
Day 9
Study Guide - Students will have time in class to work on the study guides that were distributed on Day 1. 
Day 10
Test - Students will take a test over the Civil War unit.
