"The American is a new man, who acts upon new principles; he must therefore entertain new ideas, and form new opinions. . . . Here individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men, whose labours and posterity will one day cause great changes in the world. . . .

Often grouped together as the fields of history, literature, philosophy and other related disciplines, precisely defining the terms "the humanities" can be a struggle for even the most sophisticated scholars. In fact, "the humanities" are not a thing at all, but in a very unique way, they are a process. The humanities may be thought of as the pursuit of wisdom concerning the shared human condition. The humanities provide us a means of remembering our past and envisioning our future. The humanities seek to engage us in constant reflection of ourselves as individuals and as members of larger and larger communities. From paintings, buildings, dramas and wars to friendships, Ferraris, online communities, bad jokes, and good meals, the humanities are the study of, the participation in, and the sharing of those things that humans make and those things that make us human.

The mission of the Indiana Humanities Council is to be a leader, key partner, and trusted voice in providing a humanities perspective for issues crucial to a changing Indiana.

The 2008 regular meetings of the Indiana Humanities Council Board of Directors are scheduled for the following dates:

January 18, 2008
March 21, 2008
June 20, 2008
September 18-19, 2008 (retreat)

The Council is always searching for citizens interested in serving on its volunteer, statewide Board of Directors. Please review our Request for Board Nominations. Two-thirds of the funding for IHC comes from private donations. In order to effectively provide programs, grants, and resources to Indiana citizens, we need your financial support. Please print out the gift form and mail it with your gift. All contributions to the Council, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, are fully deductible within federal and state law.
