Food for Thought partnership applications due Feb. 26
An unconventional convention that explores the topic of food through art, music, film and crafts. A citywide book club that discusses current and classic food-related books. An exhibit that explores Victorian living and nineteenth century food culture. These are all examples of food-related programs being developed across the state--and programs that the Indiana Humanities Council wants to know about.

Food for Thought is an initiative aimed at engaging Hoosiers in discussions about food and how it defines and reflects Indiana’s culture and humanity in general. The food we eat, the way we grow, prepare and eat it, as well as our rituals and traditions, distinguish us and unite us. That’s why food often plays a role in the arts, humanities and community events and initiatives. As part of this effort, the Council is partnering with organizations with programming that, in ways both obvious and subtle, encourages people to think, read and talk about food.

So, we want to know: What's on your plate?

Whether a program or event deals with issues related to innovations in food production, cooking, hunger or nutrition, we’re interested. Whether it focuses on the slow-food movement, obesity or food safety, we’re interested. And whether food is a central element or a bit player, we’re interested. We’re interested in highlighting everything from artistic performances that feature food to community discussions about hunger, and from discussions about food-related literature to conferences focused on nutrition.

Think about how your organization could take part. Be creative. Benefits of participation include being a part of a statewide publicity campaign and featured in our online calendar. Limited funds will also be available for program support.

There will be two rounds of review for partnership and program support. Deadlines are: February 26, for programs between May 2010 and February 2011; and September 30, for programs scheduled for January 2011 through October 2011.

Official Food for Thought partners already include:
·         Conner Prairie
·         Indiana Historical Society
·         Indiana State Fair
·         Indiana Artisan
·         Indiana State Department of Agriculture
·         Indiana Office of Tourism Development
·         Harrison Center for the Arts
·         Spirit & Place Festival

Through these and other efforts, we’ll work to reach a broad audience, build a diverse collaboration of organizations and events, and encourage and support participation through partnerships, grant-making and a shared marketing and promotional campaign, all with the goal of getting Hoosiers to come together to think, read and talk. To accomplish that, we need your help.
