Published this summer, The Heart of the Matter is a report of the Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences and was requested by Congress. The report was “intended to advance a dialogue on the importance of the humanities and social sciences to the future of our nation.” And, judging by the media attention it has generated, it has.
For example, Dr. Richard Brodhead (president of Duke University and co-chair of the report) chats about why English majors and engineers need a healthy dose of the humanities on The Colbert Report’s Aug. 15 show, and a number of news organizations wrote articles and opined about the state of the humanities.
