We read and talked about this book at a nursing facility. Our group, all women ages 79-94, had some lively discussions and interesting memories of what it was like living (as an adult) during the 60's. The part about a separate toilet outside led to several outhouse stories...which veered from the theme of segregation, but was interesting anyway.

The movie release coordinated with their book completion. They were very pleased that the movie followed the book so closely (unlike "Water for Elephants" movie).

Thoughtful and stimulating responses, Karen.

One of the dangers of not reading and engaging in conversation and discussion with others is that we sequester ourselves within ourselves and our own concerns and obsessions. Reading helps us grow beyond ourselves and connect with others, enlarge our world, and increase our capacities to interact. It may well be that the woeful lack of civility in our public and political discourse today is that we don't read enough to get beyond ourselves and our narrow circles.

So: readers of the world, unite and agree to disagree as we listen to one another and to others and thus enlarge ourselves.

Here's congratulations to and a vote of confidence in our new Indiana Poet Laureate!

The idea of “community” directly ties into the missions of both the JCC and Second Helpings. The JCC, which put down its roots over 50 years ago in a north side community, serves as an important destination. For everyone from the youngest members who are nurtured and cared for, to our adults who receive “nourishment” through wellness and fitness programs, Arts and Education offerings for both body and mind, to our Golden Agers, who are nourished intellectually and socially, the JCC is many things to a diverse membership. Second Helpings nourishes the community by providing 2000 deliciously and nutritiously prepared meals daily, which translates to 20,000 meals weekly to 70 organizations throughout the Indianapolis and surrounding area serving hungry children, families, adults and seniors.

Aaron, FYI, I am the daughter of a farmer. My parents worked tirelessly all their lives to make a meager living off the land. My parents, who have passed, lovingly left my siblings and me their land. I am the proud owner of rural land and am probably more of an environmentalist than most people ever hope to be. My husband and I are avid gardeners and have created a yard that is certified in the National Wildlife Federation's Backyard Wildlife Habitat. One other piece of info you evidently are not aware of, this new "green energy" called "wind power" is not going to lower our electric bills either! Another thing for you to consider...would you like to have those monstrosities in your backyard???

Drawing out the quiet book club participant is often the hardest thing to do but it is so important to give each person a chance to describe his or her reading experience. Each person's opinion has value regardless of whether they liked the book or not.
